"The apartment is perfectly located, supermarket, shops, video store, KFC just across the road!! You won't need to buy a sun umbrella as there is one in the apt, and air conditioning in the bedroom and living room - which was bliss! The nearest beach is 2 mins walk away, on the other side of the shops by a Beach Bar & Restaurant called Surfside perfect for swimming, usually beautiful calm waters. You can walk east along the beach about 5 mins to the Folkstone Marine Reserve which is perfect for snorkelling. If you don't have yr own, then equipment can be hired there, there's also a lovely picnic area set amongst trees, nice and shady. If you walk west from Surfside for about 15-20 mins you arrive at Sandy Lane beach which is VERY exclusive. You can't hire sunbeds there as they are assigned to residents of the hotel who pay £1000 per night!! (Pavarotti was staying there the week before we arrived!!) However, the beach is not private (none are on the island) so we laid our towels just to the side where there's plenty more sand and it is a lovely bay. Be sure to take yr own drinks there as you don't want to be paying their prices! Another nice beach is Mullins, near Sugar Sugar Spa, a 15 min bus ride North of Holetown. Our favourite was Accra beach at Rockley, nr Christ Church - beautiful finest sand I've ever walked on with lots of trees for shading and reasonably priced beach bar/restaurant. Also was perfect as just across the road was a Chefette (posh version of McDonalds) where you> could buy refreshing drinks at fast-food prices. To get there you take the 'Oistins' bus, costs 1.5 B$ equiv to 40p for any ride you take whether 1 mile away or 10 miles!! It's about 45 mins from Holetown to Rockley Every Friday night, Oistins is the place to be - they serve up all sorts of wonderful fresh fish on the BBQ and grills, for less than a tenner I had a big portion of red snapper and jumbo prawns with accompaniments. Beer is also cheapest here at 2.5 B$ (~70p) compared to 4 B$ in most other bars. The most popular beer is called Banks - very nice.
Also worth a visit is the Malibu Beach Resort Tour of the distillery, they have several options - best is for 65 B$ (less than £20) you get picked up at the apt, arrive and are given a lunch meal voucher (usually a few choices from the grill) + 4 tokens per person for drinks from the bar. You are taken on a tour of the distillery and then left to mooch around on their beautiful beach - sunbeds and umbrellas all included in the price, the guys there will set you up. I went jet-skiing there, it was fabulous and a really nice beach. At one end the sea is actually hot from water being pumped out from a nearby factory where sea is used to cool the turbines!! There's quite a strong under-current so be careful.
Places to eat - cheaply - KFC, Chefette scattered all round the island. For a special occasion - The Cliff, voted one of the best in the world ! was very impressive, minimum for 2 course meal is 150 B$ per person. For the 2 of us drinking a bottle of rose and a cocktail each and only one dessert came to £130 but was worth it! It was attention to detail just like below, I'd not mentioned it was my partners birthday other than the email I'd sent weeks prior to our visit. For average priced nice places to eat - Cocomos, practically opposite the apt on the other side of the shops was really lovely esp if you get a table by the beach. There's a pizza place very close by and lovely food at Asian Palms, thai restaurant - all the same price you'd pay here in the UK. Also Baku, further down from Cocomos was good and on Weds and Sat nights its Club night - does get pretty loud but its fascinating watching the locals dance and its a really nice, spacious place.
Look out for Happy Hour, at Surfside if you buy one cocktail you get one free (on selected ones!) and at other bars you get half price beer when you order one. Wine was reasonably priced, at the Cliff a bottle
of rose was 55 B$ (£15)" |
